Fun Facts about Michigan WebQuest



Introduction:

You are a Michigander and proud of it! A new student from another state has just enrolled in your class. There are so many interesting facts about Michigan you can’t wait to tell him. Your job is to help him gain a better understanding of Michigan by creating a Slide Show presentation called “Fun Facts about Michigan.”



Task:

Use the Internet links provided with each topic below to research facts about Michigan. Your slide show should include a combination of pictures and clipart to make it visually appealing along with text loaded with important facts about the state in which you live. In addition to the Internet resources you might also want to use your Social Studies text Our Michigan Adventure.



Process and Resources:

· Create a title slide for your presentation, including the title for your Slide Show, your name, and a picture you feel represents Michigan well.



· Topic 1: Michigan’s State Flag. Use the links below to research information about Michigan’s State Flag. Create a slide showing a picture of the flag. Explain what the symbols on the flag represent and what each phrase on the state flag means.






· Topic 2: Michigan’s State Symbols. Use the links below to research information about Michigan’s State Symbols. Pick four of the following (the state bird, flower, fish, tree, gemstone and stone) and create slides showing a picture and description of each.





· Topic 3: Just the Facts. Use the links below to research factual information about Michigan such as population, capitol, governor, state song, sports teams, origin of name, major industries, and points of interests, etc. Pick five you find interesting, and create slides to identify them with labeled pictures and just enough information that others will understand what they are.





· Topic 4: Connecting Michigan’s Peninsulas. Use the links below to find a map showing Michigan’s Upper and Lower Peninsulas and a picture of the Mackinac Bridge which connects them. Find information about the Mackinac Bridge. Create slides to show the two peninsulas and the bridge. Include a description of this tourist attraction and provide at least three facts about it.






· Topic 5: The Great Lakes. Use the links below to find a map of Michigan and the surrounding Great Lakes as well as information about them. Create slides to show the location of each lake as well as factual information about each one including how it got its name.





· Topic 6: History of Michigan. Use the links below to find information about the different groups (native Americans, French, British, American settlers) who played a role in the settlement and development of Michigan. Pick two of these groups and create slides to summarize the importance of their activities in Michigan. Include pictures to illustrate their activities.
